French 4 Curriculum

In this course, we will continue to work towards the Intermediate Mid-High proficiency range while discussing contemporary issues: technology, gender equity, globalization, immigration, bilingualism. This course promotes critical thinking and communication in the target language by asking learners to structure their thoughts and arguments around divergent points of view, and then to consider the two viewpoints in other contexts, pushing them towards a more nuanced, subtle view of complex issues.

Our learning targets remain the same as in French 2 and French 3. We therefore work on all three modes of communication: interpretive, presentational, and interpersonal, as well as the two cultural standards: cultural comparisons, and linking perspectives with cultural products and practices.

Our work is demonstrated through frequent ePortfolio updates, participation in group feedback, reflection, and conferencing, and group discussion. Assessment is conducted by both the adult and the youth learners using a set of rubrics standard across all levels of French.

Please note cell phones will not be permitted in ANY French learning blocks, unless explicitly stated on a case-by-case basis. This strict policy is in line with the recent U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory about the effects of Social Media and Youth Mental Health. This advisory states that while social media and personal devices are shown to have some benefits, they also pose considerable risk to youth mental health and well-being. The Surgeon General is calling on parents and caregivers to establish tech-free zones that better foster in-person relationships, teach kids digital citizenship, and report problematic content and activity.
